100+ Black Owned Businesses You Need to Know About

As much as I love fashion, buying clothes, bags, shoes, and more, I have come to realize that with so much in my closet, I barely own any products that come from businesses owned by POC or small owned brands in general. This is something I really want to change and something we all can start doing too. Especially with the pandemic, small businesses have been greatly affected. With our money, we choose what we support and what we believe in.

With petitions, protests, and more awareness being brought to topics that have been kept in the dark, there is no better time than now to start making small changes to our lives by helping out these businesses, foundations, and donating too. We can all make a difference and start supporting local and online black owned businesses. In this list, I have curated and linked 100 black owned stores from candles, museums, fashion, home, body and self-care, galleries, skin, makeup, beauty, hair, restaurants and more. Share this and tag any other brands or people that have their own business to support.

'Traditional slipware and design techniques give the mural an anachronistic feeling: the codes and shapes inscribed on the slabs seem to be telling us an ancestral story. Meanwhile, the presence of birth dates, slang words (Paigon) and graffiti-like forms ground the work into the present. The use of recurring symbols as a way to create narrative threads is an important process in Phoebe Collings James’ practice, which encompasses drawings, ceramics, video and performance. Among those, the figure of the spider and specifically the folk character of Anansi, is an important one, that appears in Live and Active Gut Cultures…. Anansi is a trickster and storyteller who lives by his wits to survive. His origins are found in the Ashanti tribe of West Africa, during the transatlantic slave trade the folklore travelled to the Caribbean and Americas where Anansi can often be found to take human form. It represents a mode of being that is linked to survival and resistance under colonial rule and capitalism. Collings James’ work often eludes linear retellings of stories. Instead, her works function as what she calls “emotional detritus”: they speak of knowledges of feelings, the debris of violence, language and desire which are inherent to living and surviving within our hostile environment. They are live and active gut cultures or subaltern spirit guides or the detritus of devotional memorabilia.'
