Why Should We Have Hobbies and Why Is It Beneficial?

What exactly is a hobby? This can be any kind of activity big or small that you do which brings you pleasure, joy or happiness. Hobbies can be anything from going to a workout class, going on a run, seeing the sunrise in the morning, listening to a podcast while going on a walk, reading your favorite romance author, gardening in your backyard, collecting jewelry from different markets around the world, scrapbooking and so much more. A lot of people believe that hobbies have to be expensive or something that requires a lot of energy when in reality it is all about what you want it to be and how it makes you happy.

It can even be grabbing a coloring book from the children’s section, a new pack of coloring markets and pencils and putting on your favorite music. Having a hobby is all about bringing joy to your life and it doesn’t matter in what form that may be. At the end of the day, it is all about you and making you plus your mind happy.

With the power of social media, it is easier than ever to pick up your phone or laptop and find something that may be exciting for you to do or try. As mentioned before, it can be booking a new workout class or finding new coffee shops in your area or connecting with people that like anything you’re interested in such as a book club. There really is no set rule or list of things you need to follow when it comes to finding a hobby or finding the right thing that makes you happy so don’t overthink it! Hobbies can be extremely beneficial for the mind and body so read along for how exactly it helps our brains and body.

Another reason why having a hobby is so beneficial is because when you are bored, instead of doing something that isn’t beneficial or is going to waste your time, you know that you will have something fun to do that is not being on your phone or laptop for hours. You will also find spending time with yourself a lot more enjoyable than waiting for your friend or someone to text you making plans outside. Often times it can be energy draining to constantly be doing something 24/7 with people, friends, family or your significant other so learn to balance this time by having something to do with your spare time.

How Does This Affect Mental Health and Boost Self-Esteem?

If you have ever had a stressful moment and you have that one thing at the end of your day that releases all this energy for you, imagine being able to channel this everyday or throughout the week and continue to get this source of happiness? This is something many people tend to not focus a lot of time on but in reality, these little things that bring us happiness are so much more important than we may think. When you spend time doing an activity that brings you joy, it can improve a lot within yourself such as your health and wellbeing.

There has been tons of research linked to activities making us a lot more happy and relaxed. This can be a huge benefit because we can often can make ourselves stressed when we are living our day to day life. We have to remember that life is not as stressful as we make it and we can find the joy in little things. We are likely to suffer less from stress, have higher connections with others, unwind our mind and learn to relax when we focus on these hobbies or pockets of peace.

A lot of times, the stuff that we see on social media can bring us more stress and overwhleming feelings so make sure you also learn how to have a difference between leisurely scrolling and then comparing yourself to what you see online. It can be so easy to pick up your phone and open one app then scroll mindlessly without realizing it’s been hours so make sure you are using your time wisely and doing something you love,
