How to Master Luxury Minimalism: Closet Basics, Capsule Wardrobe, Classic Designs and Effortless Style

Have you ever found yourself strolling around a store at the mall and you find a deal that’s too good to pass up on? Have you ever been scrolling on your phone and then you get a text message from a retailer that they’re having a huge clearance sale? Maybe you’re on your social media feed and another person is telling you through the screen that you need this Amazon sweater? We’ve all been through these moments but this doesn’t mean we have to fall for it and buy things because the deal seems too good.

Overconsumption has slowly taken over and it’s not just in fashion but also with skincare, home, books and more. People buy the same moisturizers or serums in bulk, the same pair of shoes in 5 different colors and books to fill a bookshelf that are never read. If you want to break the bad habit of buying things you don’t need and want to start investing in luxury minimalism for your lifestyle, we’re covering all the tips you can begin adding into your life starting today.

Invest in Quality Over Quantity

Focus on high-quality, timeless pieces that last longer instead of accumulating trendy, disposable items. A lot of people will buy the cheaper sweater on the rack because the price seems great at the moment, but don’t think about the long term effect of the sweater in your closet. It most likely won’t last a few washes, the quality won’t hold up and the color might even fade out.

These are all the risks of what could happen when you decide to go for the cheaper item rather than save up a little more whether it takes weeks or months and get the better quality piece. A well-made item often brings more satisfaction and utility than several cheaper alternatives.

Curate a Capsule Wardrobe or Essentials Collection

Build a wardrobe around versatile, classic staples that can be mixed and matched effortlessly, which will reduce the need for excessive purchases. The key to the perfect closet is by creating a capsule wardrobe. This can include a good pair of jeans, t-shirts, blazers, knitwear, cardigans, outerwear and more.

Capsule wardrobes are meant to not only simplify your life and your closet, but also let you streamline everything you wear so that it all goes together. There is also a 3-3-3 rule that many follow which means 3 tops, 3 bottoms, 3 shoes and combine these to create outfits. It’s a fashion rule some have started adding into their closet and it has helped with being more sustainable, having a less cluttered closet, elevating style and more.

Capsule wardrobes are also curated by you and your lifestyle. If you don’t need blazers, work office attire and loafers, then don’t buy them. Look at your day to day schedule and see what works best for you before committing to this. Wear what makes you feel the most comfortable and confident!

Adopt a ‘One In, One Out’ Rule

For every new item you bring into your life, remove one you no longer use or love. This keeps your space clutter-free and encourages mindful consumption. This is also great to give your clothes and items a chance at another life with someone else. A lot of people donate to women’s shelters, bring items to thrift stores or pass down to friends and family.

By prioritizing giving something away before bringing something new to your closet, you have the chance to try new items and give someone else the opportunity to try something new for themselves as well. The one in and one out rule can be used for all other areas of your life and not just fashion too.

Prioritize Experiences Over Material Goods

The next time you tap your card on a large purchase, think about other ways you can use that money such as towards experiences, travel or self-improvement. Rather than material possessions, spending can sometimes be redirected towards more enriching moments and building long lasting memories you will never forget. There is a way to balance both but it is still something to consider.

Focus on Classic Design

Rather than going for items that have bright colors or unique designs and patterns, it can often be better to opt for items that ensure elegance. We all have those moments where we get through our closet and feel like we have absolutely nothing to wear or even pair so save the trouble and go for pieces that are timeless and add some functionality to not just your outfits, but to your life as well.

It can be fun to buy the trendy pieces that people are posting on social media, but remember not to fall for every micro trend and always consider the long game for things you’re buying for your closet.

Adopt a ‘Wish List’ Approach

Who doesn’t love browsing and shopping online for new pieces? It can be fun but also add up quickly so instead of buying things immediately, start a wishlist approach. Do this and start to revisit it biweekly or after a certain amount of time so that you can truly determine if the purchase aligns with you, your lifestyle and your values.

Having this wishlist approach also helps you in the long run so that you don’t regret buying something in the heat of the moment or so that you don’t end up not using the item long term either. Sometimes we purchase things so fast and we build this life around it and tell ourselves why we need it but the hype can die out after a few weeks, even months so it’s always good to have a shopping method.
